Markus represents clients before the EU and national courts (both in Belgium and other countries), arbitral tribunals, the European Commission and several Member States’ national competition authorities.
Markus’ experience includes assisting clients in M&A transactions, FSR, FDI and merger control cases (acting on more than 100 transactions and securing merger antitrust clearance from more than 30 competition authorities within and outside the EU), compliance programmes and cartel investigations, private damages actions, strategic alliances (joint ventures and cooperation agreements) and other commercial arrangements (such as distribution, R&D and technology licensing), issues related to abuses of dominance, EU State aid rules, and dispute resolution (before courts and arbitral tribunals).
Markus also regularly provides clients with advice regarding EU sanctions legislation and EU regulatory legislation (including matters relating to technical, health and environmental regulations and standards, and consumer protection and safety).
He has filed a large number of successful (leading the Member States to change their national regulations) internal market complaints with the European Commission and won Court cases against Member States when the matter was brought directly to Court.
