VBB has a leading reputation for handling WTO and FTA dispute settlement proceedings.

Our integrated Brussels and Geneva team has represented governments, as complainant, respondent or third party, in disputes in relation to virtually all WTO agreements, including the GATT 1994, the Anti-Dumping Agreement, the SCM Agreement, the TBT Agreement, the SPS Agreement and the TRIMs Agreement.

Our experience covers all stages of proceedings (consultations, panel stage, Appellate Body stage, ad hoc Article 25 appeal arbitration, and implementation).

In the course of our work, we have accumulated vast subject-matter expertise and led on landmark disputes. Our WTO expertise includes accession protocols, trade-related investment measures, intellectual property rights, subsidies, technical barriers to trade, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, and customs valuation and classification.

At FTA level we have represented multiple governments on various FTA chapters, including sustainability, subsidies/competition and trade remedies.

We have acted on numerous ‘firsts’, including the first WTO dispute relating to the national security exception in the GATT 1994, the first challenge of the WTO compatibility of the EU’s climate policy measures, the first appeal arbitration under Article 25 DSU, as well as the first EU FTA labour law dispute.

We provide expert dispute management and overall strategic support from inception to conclusion of a dispute.

...long experience and deep knowledge.
