    The doctrine of change of circumstances (finally) codified in Belgian civil law

    The economic recovery in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, the military conflict between Russia and Ukraine and the recent skyrocketing energy and gas prices are causing a significant increase of prices of finished products, semi-finished products and raw materials, as well as supply problems for certain of these products. In many ongoing contractual relationships, this drastically disrupts the contractual balance between the parties.

    Tetyana Payosova and Joanna Redelbach co authored WTO chapter in The International Trade Review

    Van Bael & Bellis senior associates Tetyana Payosova (Geneva) and Joanna Redelbach (Brussels) have co-authored the WTO chapter in the 8th edition of The International Trade Law Review published by Law Business Research. The chapter examines some of the key developments in WTO case law over the past year and addresses the alternative means of settling appeals in the absence of a functioning WTO Appellate Body, including the Multiparty Interim Appeal Arbitration Agreement (MPIA) and the first-ever recourse to arbitration under Article 25 of the WTO Dispute Settlement Understanding.

    VBB proudly sponsors ELSA Moot Court Competition on WTO Law

    Van Bael & Bellis, a leading international trade law firm with offices in Brussels, London and Geneva, is the main sponsor of the John H. Jackson Moot Court Competition on WTO Law organised by the European Law Students’ Association (ELSA). This year, for its 20th edition, Van Bael & Bellis partner and head of the Geneva office, Clotilde du Parc; partner, Isabelle Van Damme; senior associate, Tetyana Payosova; and associate, Victor Crochet, acted as panelists in the final rounds of the competition. In addition, Victor Crochet, co-authored this year’s case and served, together with Isabelle Van Damme, as one of the judges in the Grand Final. The John H. Jackson Moot Court Competition is a student-organised competition designed to enhance participants’ knowledge of international trade law and WTO dispute settlement procedures. From February to May 2022, 71 universities and more than 200 students from all over the world participated in six regional rounds. After months of competition, the best 25 teams advanced to the Final Oral Round that took place at WTO Headquarters in Geneva (Switzerland) from 28 June to 2 July 2022. Congratulations to the University of Zurich for winning the competition, and to Katholieke Universiteit Leuven for being the runner-up!

    Uğur Can Hekim moderates panel on “Redirecting the World Trade Organization” at the Horasis Global Meeting virtual event 2021

    Van Bael & Bellis lawyer Ugur Can Hekim moderated a panel titled “Redirecting the World Trade Organization” on 8 June 2021 at the Horasis Global Meeting – one of the foremost annual meetings of the world’s leading decision makers from business, government and civil society. The topics under discussion were current challenges in the multilateral trading system, expectations for the new DG’s tenure, the WTO's role in global health, environment and sustainable development in the midst of global crises as well as its position in the global interinstitutional order. The panel speakers were: Jonathan Fried, former Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Canada to the WTO, former personal representative of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to the G20, Senior Associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), and Senior Advisor at Albright Stonebridge Group, USA; Ricardo Meléndez-Ortiz, former Director of the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD - Geneva), co-founder and former General Director, Fundación Futuro Latinoamericano (FFLA – Quito), permanent Colombian Delegate and negotiator for GATT/WTO, former Principal Adviser to the Colombian Minister of Economic Development and Chief of Administration at the office of the President of Colombia, and Strategic Adviser at Latin Trade Group, USA; and Kola Adesina, Group Managing Director of Sahara Group, a pan-Africanist entrepreneur who promotes regional integration and trade among the states of African states.
